ABOUT

The Jaider Esbell Gallery of Contemporary Indigenous Art is a collective and independent space that serves for the production and circulation of indigenous artists. We understand that art can be a vigorous meeting point among worlds. Therefore, we seek to encourage the initiatives of indigenous artists and their communities, contributing with the necessary means for them to move with autonomy and protagonism in different contexts. We root our work in the direct relationship with various indigenous communities, especially in the state of Roraima, promoting the development of art education projects and strengthening their connections with other spaces. Our actions are aimed at valuing the knowledge and traditional and contemporary forms of expression of indigenous communities. We are guided by our commitment to original and environmental rights structuring all our initiatives, such as art exhibitions, residencies, publications, training workshops, educational programs, and so on.

The Gallery was inaugurated in 2013 by Jaider Esbell, artist and curator of the Makuxi people. The Gallery is an important space for the articulation of the cultural scene in Boa Vista, Roraima. We have brought together one of the largest and most relevant collections of Contemporary Indigenous Art in the country, with works by artists from different peoples in Brazil and the Americas. The Gallery has also a rich library of reference works on indigenous art, literature and education, as well as exhibition catalogs, audiovisual material and relevant documents from the history of indigenous art. The entire collection is open to the public and has welcomed researchers and general people interested in Esbell’s works.

In order to better accommodate our collection, enlarge our working space, and strengthen our residency projects for indigenous artists, we are currently moving our headquarters. For the time being, as we have no definition for the reopening of the new space in downtown Boa vista, scheduled visits are temporarily suspended. Meanwhile, we continue with all our activities normally.
